People ask me for Indian food recommendations more than I probably deserve to be asked, so here's the list I actually give out when someone wants the best Indian restaurants in Calgary and doesn't want to scroll through fifty Google results to find them. Five spots. One of them isn't really a contest, and I'll just say that upfront instead of pretending this is neutral.
Gate of India is the one I keep going back to
I'll be honest, this isn't really a top five where the order is close. Gate of India, out in the Country Hills area in northeast Calgary, is the place I recommend first almost every time, and there's a reason for that beyond just "it's good."
The lunch buffet is the whole pitch. It runs every single day from 11 to 3, which sounds like a small thing until you've shown up somewhere else expecting a buffet and found out it's only on Tuesdays. The dal makhani alone is worth the drive. Rich, a little smoky, the kind of thing you go back for seconds on before you've even finished your naan. The tandoori stuff comes out hot and actually tastes like it just left the oven instead of sitting under a lamp for an hour, and the biryani has real depth to it rather than just being flavored rice with a chicken thigh dropped on top.
I brought my in-laws here for a birthday last year, three generations, wildly different spice tolerances, and everyone found something they loved without anyone having to compromise. That's not nothing. It's also got a 4.6-star rating across close to 1,700 Google reviews, which for a restaurant that's been running this long tells you the quality isn't a fluke.
It's close to the airport too, on-site parking, no basement stairs or weird accessibility issues, just an easy place to land. If you only try one restaurant off this list, make it this one. India Paradise, if you want something newer
This one just opened in March, the first Western Canada location for a chain that's been building a name for itself out east. Good dosa, solid North Indian menu too. Still finding its rhythm as a new opening so service can be a little uneven, but the food's there.
Deluxe Dhaba, for something low-key
Small spot in the northeast, nothing fancy about the room. Dal makhani, butter chicken, chole bhature, a sweets counter in the corner. It's the kind of place that feels like someone's home kitchen scaled up, which I mean as a compliment.
Maharajah, for Kashmiri and Mughlai
Been open in Discovery Ridge since 2002, and it's one of the only spots in the city doing Kashmiri food specifically. Worth a trip if you're tired of every menu in town looking the same. Not the trendiest room, but that's kind of the point.
Kondattam, for a night out
Downtown, woman-owned, South Indian leaning menu with a real cocktail program. This is the one you pick for a date or a "let's make an evening of it" dinner, not a quick weekday lunch. It's newer, so the reviews are still stacking up, but it made a best-new-restaurants list not long after opening.
Where I'd actually send you
If someone's visiting Calgary and only has time for one Indian restaurant, I'm sending them to Gate of India, full stop. The buffet alone does more work than most restaurants manage with a full dinner menu, and the fact that it's open every single day removes basically all the planning. The other four are genuinely worth trying too, especially if you're already deep into exploring the city's food scene, but if you want the one that's never let me down, that's the one.
